Immersive Experience of Socio-spatial Segregation

Background

The aim of this joint research project is to use an innovative technology, namely the immersive experience of virtual reality, using a novel research methodology applied to transdisciplinary research processes with the goal of linking science and technology to policy making in order to address complex urban issues. This research uses empirical research results around gated communities in Bogotá and their representation in immersive experiences to test the impact on policymakers’ values and perceptions.

Research questions

What are the effects of immersive experiences on urban policymakers perceptions of complex phenomena such as sociospatial segregation?

Policy relevance

A major challenge in transdisciplinary research is the dialogue between scientists and real world actors, which can be achieved by engaging in a mutual learning environment. This project proposes the use of a novel communication tool to enhance the dialogue between scientists and policy makers at the later stages of the transdisciplinary research process, when first research results are available.
